Foreign Affairs Minister was not Briefed on Arenal Murder
On Monday night, a Belizean was murdered on the Guatemalan side of Arenal. Twenty-four year old Mario Estuardo Cunil was stabbed to the chest allegedly by Guatemalan national Rolman Aldana Alvarado during a brawl at a bar. We asked the minister if the Ministry of Foreign affairs will be taking up the issue with Guatemalan government. Elrington says that he hasn’t been briefed about the murder.
Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“I am certain that somebody at my ministry would have that. None of that has been transmitted to me at this time. This is the first time I am hearing of it from you, but I am sure if such a thing occurred, our people would have information on it—either at our embassy in Guatemala or here in Belize.”
Duane Moody
“And what would be the next step taken?”
Wilfred Elrington
“Like what happens in any other country…you would just have to monitor done by the authorities in that country and we lend whatever assistance we can to the family. It is just like when a Guatemalan is murdered here really; there is not much that you can do. Guatemalans just have to wait, find out what is the result, try to help with the burial and that kind of thing.”

Heart warming response from the person who should have been called and briefed first anytime of the morning, evening, noon or night that any Belizean is killed in any foreign country.
