GSU Accused of Shooting Meighan Brothers in Mayflower Street Area

Shortly after the stabbing of George McKenzie Junior on the ITVET Compound, shots rang out over on south side of Belize City in the Mayflower/Banak Street area. Brothers Tyrone and Shaquille Meighan were both shot to the legs by who residents claim were officers attached to the Gang Suppression Unit. The Meighans were reportedly on their way home when they came under fire. The incident was caught on video as the officers cordoned off the area with rifles in hand. In the amateur video taken by a resident in the area, a Meighan brother was seen on the ground while the officers dressed in camouflage fatigue shouted and harassed residents who jeered at them. The Commissioner of Police has given directives for an internal investigation into the shooting.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“There was an incident in the Mayflower area between GSU and the elements of GSU and the elements from the Mayflower/Banak Street area. It is an unfortunate situation and I have spoke to the Commissioner about it and the Commissioner has directed that the Professional Standard Bureau conduct an intensive investigation into the matter to ensure that there is impartiality in the way that the investigation is being conducted. I do not think that the force used by GSU was necessary and I have made that clear to them and as a police department, these are the things that we are trying to rid ourselves of. We cannot be out there under one hand saying that we want to be friendly with the community and then on the other hand we have other elements of the department going after people in such an aggressive manner, basically destroying all the work that we have been doing on south side Belize City. From what I saw on videos and what I was told, it does not look good and I am sure like I said the investigation will reveal what caused the shooting and the chips will fall where they may.”
