Man killed trying to calm agitated neighbour
A watchman from a Dangriga gas station was fatally wounded after being shot in the chest on Sunday. Reports are that on around four p.m., David Gilbert Lopez approached a resort in the Riverdale area saying he was looking for a thief who stole his money. According to reports, he appeared to be under the influence and was waving a gun around. Giovanni Posadas Medina, thirty-five, apparently came over from the nearby gas station to see if he could get him to drop the weapon, but what happened next was a surprise to everyone.
Eyewitness to Shooting
?Unprovoked, he lowered the gun on Giovanni and shot him. He wasn?t agitated at Giovanni at the time, it didn?t seem like that. David had been pointing the gun at several different people, Giovanni walked up, saying tranquilo (relax), tranquilo, and we heard a shot go off and Giovanni just dropped down. There was no struggle whatsoever, Giovanni was friends with David and was just walking up with his hands like this, just saying tranquilo, tranquilo. I came running out, I was just yelling at David to drop the gun, drop the gun, but he lowered the gun on Giovanni and shot him.?
Posadas died on the way to the Southern Regional Hospital. Shortly after the incident, police arrested sixty-one year old David Lopez and today he was charged with murder. He has been remanded until May twenty-sixth. Police also recovered a twelve gauge shotgun they believe was the murder weapon. Giovanni Posadas Medina was a Honduran working in Belize. According to family members he was scheduled to return home today to visit his young children.
