Will constitutional challenge pave the way to “legalize” marijuana?

Is a constitutional challenge in the making to decriminalize marijuana? The government had set up a committee to consider the decriminalization of a small quantity of cannabis, but the recommendations of that committee have been before Cabinet and there has been no response, likely because of the negative reaction from the church community. In an interview with News Five, attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley confirmed that plans are in place to help rehabilitate the reputation of a drug that has sent many to jail.

“This is really unfair what is going on in the country you know, that all the young people, all of them are subject to being dragged out of their vehicle, searched in public like they are criminals because they supposedly the look for some kind of weed. Take them down to the station for zero point two, zero point three grams of marijuana. I don’t drink and I don’t smoke but that is wrong. Because tobacco and alcohol worse than weed and it is time for society to address that problem so we can deal with it. It is legal now for homosexuals to do what they want to do in the privacy of their home, well it is time for it to be legal for people who want to smoke weed without the police harassing them. That is what the people out here are saying.”

“All I am saying is that they are going to mount a challenge to say the scientific and medical information that is available in 2016. Does not support treating alcohol the way they used to treat homosexuals one time. Homosexuals were deemed to be deviants, were deemed to be mentally disturbed, something must wrong with them. That is not fair to them, it is not fair to people who want roll up a lee bit ah weed and smoke it, that is because nothing is wrong with it, how can they buy tobacco and buy rum, beat up their wives, drive on the road and knock down people and kill people and that is okay with the society and marijuana that makes you creative and make you to be a Usain Bolt they lock you up for it.”
News Five understands that the challenge is coming from sections of the Rastafarian community, including those residing in the Harmonyville community on the George Price Highway. There is a regional movement both recognizing legal medical marijuana and outright legalization or decriminalization as in Mexico, Canada and Jamaica.
