Fashion show displays many cultures

Story PictureThe four-day Easter weekend may have put a dent in your pocketbook, but if you’ve recovered enough to go out this weekend, the folks at the House of Culture are inviting you to something special on Friday night.

Patrick Jones, Reporting

The show will feature beautiful young ladies modelling elaborate fashions from all over the world. Organiser of "Passion for Fashion", Lita Krohn, says the idea came from a member of the diplomatic corps as a way of earning some project money.

Lita Krohn, Organizer, Passion for Fashion

"It’s the first time we’re doing it in Belize. We are just hoping that we get the diplomatic corps to help us in fund raising. This is a fund raiser for our sea wall. We have a little piece of sea wall that didn’t get finished, and also for our art classes."

The models, who are mainly university students volunteering their time and talents, will show off costumes of many cultures.

Debbie Lisbey, Fashion Coordinator

"You’re going to see India, you going to see Lebanon, you’re going to see Garifuna. You’re gong to see the Maya, all three types."

Linda Blease, Modelling Creole Fashion

"Well I am depicting the Creole culture, with Creole heritage and representing, as you can see. And it’s a unique design. It’s design used in the past by the Creole culture when it just came out in Belize. We’re not really doing like modern day Creole outfits, because as you can see the Creole just blend into everybody else’s culture. So I am doing them back in the past."

Sherilee McKenzie, Modelling Garifuna Culture

"I am depicting the costume of the Garifuna people. This is a typical Garifuna outfit. The colours are yellow black and white."

"What does it mean to you to be in the show?"

Sherilee McKenzie

"Well to be in the show it means a lot because it is my very first time being in a fashion show and I know I will have fun. It will be a fun thing to do, modelling a costume worn by different cultures, so I invite all of you to come out and support this worthy cause."

Debbie Lisbey

"We have had to acquire costumes from many different sources and we had to fit in all of the girls, so it’s been a huge task."

The show will be staged at the House of Culture on Regent Street on Friday night beginning at eight. Lisbey says every ticket purchased will contribute to the sea wall project and entertain those who attend.

Debbie Lisbey

"They can expect to have their visual senses stimulated. We will be on the seaside showing you beautiful models in beautiful elaborate costumes from all over the world."

Patrick Jones, for News 5.

Apart from the costumes the models will wear on stage, the local Black Gold agency will also appear on Friday night. Music will be provided by Pablo Collado and additional entertainment by the Belize Dance Company. Tickets are twenty-five dollars for adults and ten dollars for children. Food and drinks will be on sale.
