Former U.D.P. Minister, Melvin Hulse, weighs in on national affairs

At an event held earlier today, we got the opportunity to speak with former U.D.P. Minister Melvin Hulse. The Stann Creek resident says that the district is least involved in political issues, but residents are concerned about the immigration scandal and have taken part in demonstrations—both with the churches and other groups. According to Hulse, Belizeans taking to the streets is an opportunity for the government to understand that there is need to change.

“We want good governance—that is neither to say that we are having it or we are not having—but at least, at last the people get back on the streets because nobody change themselves. It is the becall of the people and the only way the people can make their voice heard—they have called on every radio show for the last ten thousand years—what makes changes is the people saying guest what I don’t agree with what’s going on. Give me some real answers or we take to the streets and they have done that. And now hopefully…and must not get discouraged from a senate hearing. The senate…noh make they get discouraged and say well the senate can’t put people in jail and the senate can’t take them to court and the senate can’t charge them; that’s not the job of the senate. The senate needs to do—not expose, but bring out as impartially as possible the exact status so that if there is wrongdoing, it is between the police and the D.P.P. to say guess what, this has been exposed or this has been clarified or this has been aired and we think as the law enforcement people that there are situations that will warrant or justify a criminal investigation. But at the end of the day, regardless of how it works out, at least the people will be able to hear…because everybody listened to the hearing. Under DFC and Social Security everybody mi listen. But at least when they arrived at a decision, it was not somebody else’s opinion and it is not a political party rallying its people—whether P.U.P., U.D.P. or the third party; it’s not that—and we wah get a better position of how we want move forward.”
