A Rape Case is Dropped in the Supreme Court

Another man also walked free of a sexual crime today. Only in the case of Long Caye resident, Pedro Trujeque, he was reminded that the rape charge against him can still be brought back. Today in court, the D.P.P.’s office had no choice but to file a nolle prosequi in the rape case against Trujeque after the alleged rape victim fled the country following her traumatic experience. Trujeque, who is in his forties, is a resident of Long Caye. He was accused of raping a woman on the island where he resides on February eleventh of 2014. The woman came to Belize seeking employment; she met Trujeque who invited her to the island where he would have a job for her. She went and after her first day of work, she claims that an inebriated Trujeque asked her for a kiss and when she refused; he raped her.  The woman reported the rape and requested court action but 9 days after the incident; she left Belize claiming she just couldn’t live here anymore. Since then, she has not returned.  As a result, Crown Counsel for the D.P.P., Janelle Tillett, had to enter a nolle prosequi this morning in the Supreme Court before Justice Adolph Lucas.   Before leaving the court, Judge Lucas informed Trujeque that since the D.P.P. has entered a nolle prosequi against him, the charge can still be brought back if the complainant is located in the future.
