Teachers Under Attack! B.N.T.U. Wonders Why?

Keisha Young

According to the B.N.T.U., since Sunday, the teachers have been under attack by the Government of Belize. The teachers are known as nation builders, but according to Executive Secretary Keisha Young, over the past week, teachers have been accused of going down a destructive path, endangering children who they teach, feed, and counsel.

Keisha Young, Executive Secretary, B.N.T.U.

“The intimidation and attacks that have come fast and furious at the B.N.T.U. since Sunday when the Prime Minister made a public statement to the nation of Belize—a statement that was almost ten minutes long. And you have seen that statement go countrywide during primetime, constantly attacking the B.N.T.U.  And we have to question, where are the monies coming from that this government has invested in vilifying the B.N.T.U.? We have also seen on the news items this week and we have heard from some people on the ground that ministers of government even have been visiting schools, making calls, reaching out to teachers, trying to intimidate them and to stop them from striking on Monday. And we have to ask again, why is it that all thirty-one ministers, caretakers and representatives of this government have been called out and asked to undertake such actions against the teachers of the B.N.T.U.? We have also seen letters that have come from managements going directly to teachers, to principals, indicating that they will initiate action against the teachers if they participate in Monday’s industrial action.”

Simple, very simple to guess. The government is afraid They know very well that the teachers are not playing, they are serious and they mean serious business. Those ones in power did not learned from 2005, when they were among the teacher shouting civil disobedience. The present prime minister was there. What has change his mind now or is he suffering from amnesia. How convenient it is for him.
