Caleb Orozco Celebrates Gay Partners Taking Cases to Court

Domestic violence, unfortunately, is not unusual; many cases are reported at the Family Court and Magistrate’s Courts on a daily basis. But since August tenth, when Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin made the historic Section Fifty-three decision, two such cases, both involving male partners, were lodged with the courts and reported in the news. Now, two cases do not make a trend. And the avenue was always open despite stigma and discrimination. But UNIBAM executive director, Caleb Orozco, told us earlier this week that there is something to be inspired by.

“I believe it was Scott Strim who said on September sixteenth that gay rights are for gays; human rights are for humans, failing to remind the public that when my mother gave birth to me, she did not give birth to a gorilla. With that said, it is important for my community, the LGBT population, to assert their right to access the court like every other citizens can; to protect themselves against members of their own community or anybody else that may seem to have violate their personal security. Domestic violence reports have nothing to do with section fifty-three; my population could have always reported domestic violence prior to section fifty-three so it is neither here nor there. The inspirational thing about those reports is that those people have been inspired or in this case have determined that their human dignity, their personal security was worth it enough to go through the court system. And they must be applauded—I say applaud because never before have we seen in such a visible manner our community step up to seek the value of protection that the court offers.”

Both cases are still pending trial.
