Teachers and Chamber of Commerce Meet Next Week

Luke Palacio

As has been reported, the Belize National Teachers’ Union and Chamber of Commerce and Industry have been in dialogue concerning the ongoing industrial action. We will have more on the Chamber’s plans shortly, but as you’ll hear from President Luke Palacio, the two organizations will be meeting next week.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We have written to the Chamber, because again, like we have mentioned in the media, on the thirtieth of September we met with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry; again, to give them our side of the story, if you will, as it relates to what has been going on, and we have agreed that yes, we will maintain dialogue; so we wrote to them asking them what type of support that they could give, that would be visible as opposed to verbal; and they have invited us to a meeting, a special general meeting that they’ll be having next week. At that time we will know what type of support to lend, and how that will play out.”

They are taking too long and people have seen this. In 2005 they were more engaged. The agenda of BNTU is very clear; it dose not need a million dollars to carry it out. The issues in 2005 were similar to those today. The utilities unions are also taking too long to engage. Fight for country people before it is too late. At least we can say that this is not a civil war. There if no blood shed like in other countries in the Americas.
