Dickie Bradley Reflects on Life of his Relative

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley

Late this evening, News Five spoke with attorney Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley, a relative of Senior Counsel Young.  He shared with us a brief reflection on the personal and professional life of the venerated lawyer.

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley, Relative Michael Young

“Actually we are in fact related by blood. His father and my mother, who is also a Young, are very close friends and in fact Horace Young, Michael’s dad did most of the legal work for my mother. Michael as a human being was a warm, outgoing, well-loved person. He of course is remembered as an outstanding attorney-at-law, Senior Counsel, a very eloquent and a very brilliant one at that. In fact, even as I am speaking, I can tell you that the news hasn’t really sunk in as yet among both myself and most of us who have known Michael. It is hard to tell that he is really not here; it is a shocking piece of information we’ve all received.  In fact, one of the first persons to text and tell me what was happening—I was in the Supreme Court—was Darrell Carter who worked with Michael Young. Michael Young played a major role in the Crime Commission settled to tackle what was then the first disturbing behavior of young people turning to violence in Belize City. And he put in a work on that commission and that in fact is the hallmark of the person known as Michael Young. Hard worker, dedicated; he did have conscience for what was happening on the south side of Belize City. In fact, he married one of south side beauty, Denise Barrow. He in fact lived on south side, I believe at the foreshore area, where his dad had a property. And I mean this is really bad news for the legal profession and for us to lose an outstanding bright, intelligent, young man like Michael Young. He has his law firm right on Regent Street, which is not very far from where I am on Dean Street. And in fact, yesterday as I was rushing to go to court, he was pulling what was becoming a kind of trademark among the attorneys—now they have so much law books and so much brief to be carrying. He was on Regent Street, close to the magistracy, pulling his stuff, getting ready to go into court to fully represent his client, as has been his hallmark in relation to giving his all to the commitment you make when you take up a case. And he was going along jovial, responding to persons hailing him. In fact, that is the man, walking to court, greeting people—almost like his dad. As a young boy, I could always remember Horace Young walking Regent Street as an attorney and stopping and speaking to the so called ordinary man on the street as well. So as recent as yesterday, he was in fact practicing his profession; he was on his way, he was in court.”

In the wake of Young’s death, colleagues from the Bar Association have taken to social media to express their condolences and remembrance.
