Ministry of Education Issues Plans for Deduction to Salaries

Having put their strike on hold, the teachers are still facing another battle; this time, its salary deductions for the striking days. Today, the Chief Education Officer Doctor Carol Babb issued yet another memo to general managers of government and grant-aided primary schools and board of managements and principals of secondary schools and junior colleges.  As a follow-up to a previous memo instructing managers to withhold the salaries of teachers who participated in the strike, the memo outlines the guideline that is to be used to prepare deductions from salaries between October third and the eighteenth. It further states that the total amount should be deducted in one payment. This method, according to the release, has been verified by the Treasury Department.

“Primary schools, as Doctor Babb was explaining, salaries…government contribution to government and grant aided schools covers one hundred percent of salaries. For secondary schools, government’s contribution is estimated at this point on the basis of enrollment. But within that estimation, that estimation includes the seventy percent of salaries that government contributes to the teachers of the long standing arrangement that exists where it is seventy-thirty at the secondary level and at the junior college level—at the other levels it is also seventy-thirty for grant aided schools.”

The release ends by saying that the deadline for submission of revised pay sheets—assumingly with deduction included—has been extended to forty-thirty p.m. on Friday.
