“Sonny” Pitterson’s “Feed My Sheep Kitchen” Re-Opens
The late Zebedee “Sonny” Pitterson felt the call to minister to members of his community. In addition to his popular bakery, Sunnyside on Racecourse Street, in 1994 he opened the “Feed My Sheep Kitchen” on East Collet Canal. He fed hundreds of children and lesser-privileged persons for over twenty years until his passing in 2014. While the bakery continues in family hands, the kitchen was shut down for a while. That is, until today, when it was re-opened under the auspices of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of which Sonny was a devoted member. Pastor Angelo Dominguez, who shepherds five Southside Seventh-Day Adventist churches, describes the church’s plans to establish and expand the program and provide other community needs.

“We believe as a Church that the work that Mister Pitterson was doing was a divine initiative. He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and we simply want to continue the work that he has started, in reaching out to the children that he used to feed. But we would like to do more than that; we want to reach out to the poor, we want to reach out to the elderly; we want to impact our community as a Church, following in his footsteps as well. To start with we are planning to feed eighty children – our projection is much more than that – and then we also want, as I said previously, to target the poor, we want to target the elderly; we’re gonna have a special day where we’re going to have a soup kitchen, and invite them in; we’ll be having health talks, free blood pressure check-ups; also it’s going to be something like a resource center where the children can come, be assisted with their homework; free counselling as well, from professional counsellors; so it’s a holistic program that we are looking at.”
Costs are expected to run between a thousand five hundred and two thousand dollars per month. They will be paid by the Church and selected individual donors. Currently the kitchen, run by a committee of Adventist elders, will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but it is working toward being open all week.
