What Will It Take to Implement Sex Offenders’ Registry?

Another aspect of criminal justice as it relates to sexual assault cases is the continued care to ensure that not only victims, but all of society are aware of the most violent and unredeemable offenders. As with other countries, Belize has provisions for a Sex Offenders’ Registry; but it has not been implemented despite being legislated in 2014. Consultant to the JURIST Project, attorney Diana Shaw, explains why.

“The Criminal Code was amended in Belize in 2014 and it does make provision for a Sexual Offences Registry, so it is in the law; now they have to allocate the budget to appoint a Registrar, and to set in place the staff and the mechanism for the registry to be done.”
