Courts Belize Completes Sewing Circle Project
Courts has embarked on an initiative to empower primarily single mothers and women who have retired and are seeking a means to earn an income. Using their Brother Sewing product, the participants were taught how to use the machines to make bedspreads and got a chance to win various prizes courtesy of Courts. The competition was staged today immediately following the certificate ceremony at the main store at mile one on the George Price Highway. Marketing Officer, Grisel Carballo explains.

“It was open to most of them some of them are single mothers, some retired and like you said one man. The applications went out from September and September twenty-fourth, they started the classes. So it was every Saturday from one to three, for two hours for four weeks. We had two courses—both of them learn the same thing; to do bed fittings. The bed fittings, the flat sheet and two pillow cases for double-sided bed which is launched right now on our sleep center. So it is amazing to see their final product; most of them have never seen a sewing machine in their life so learning something new and instilling that within them. Today they received certificate of participation and knowing what to sew. And secondly we had another part which is the competition and another social for them as a mini-graduation for them. And as you can see on our sleep center, their final product is on display. We have four judges today; two of them being from YWCA…instructors who know how they have sewn, what types of stitches and how it should be fitted on the bed. So right now the judging is taking place and we are going to find out who are the winners.”
First prize winner for the competition walks away with a Brother’s Sewing Machine and other prizes. And online social media competition will also take place where the products with the most likes, will win prizes as well.
