13th Senator Means Business!

Critics of the appointment of a thirteenth senator, including Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, have dismissed the addition of one more parliamentarian as merely another stumbling block in government’s move to achieve its mandate.  Salas maintains that the role of the thirteenth senator is to advocate for sustainable human development, regardless of criticism.

“Our key function is sustainable human development and that is enshrined within the same N.G.O. Act, be it nature conservation, be it women’s issues, gender issues and there’s a long list; education and the constitution, public health and all of that.  It’s about sustainable human development and so I have heard from a couple colleagues who have called me and said, we have seen your press release, we have seen your criteria and it is more rigid than the want we have and he says, wow.  I said yes, because we mean business.  We want to raise the bar, we want to raise the bar in terms of transparency and accountability.  So, it’s not about stymieing the process or being in opposition, it’s about being part of the sustainable human development of this nation.”
