Cops investigate embezzlement at U.B.
It is thievery of a seismic magnitude whose tremors may have resounding effects. Today, the University of Belize admitted that it has been the victim of embezzlement to the tune of one hundred and sixteen thousand dollars. According to U.B. official Dudley Heredia, the monies went missing between August 2002 and January 2004. Administrators we spoke with this morning say they have yet to determine exactly how the person or persons responsible were able to steal the money, unchecked, for almost a year and a half and even suggested they were unsure of which account or accounts had been hit. Amid questions of serious financial laxity at the university, this afternoon a release from the office of U.B.’s President, Dr. Corinth Morter Lewis, indicates that as of today, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, the Director of the Adult and Continuing Education Department, is no longer authorized to conduct business on the university’s behalf. No direct connection was made between Kamaruzzaman’s termination and the missing funds and U.B. officials declined to elaborate as the matter is now in police hands.
