Special Envoy Says “Insensitive” Society Must Learn Compassion

In the past month and a half, we’ve reported on four children murdered in Belize City. Three children, eleven year old Aaron Gabourel, six year old Empress Hamilton and four year old Ian Sambula, were all killed in an arson on Aloe Vera Street. The most recent and tragic murder is that of seven year old Tyler Savery, a victim of gun violence. The killings of the minors have shaken up the nation to the core. Today, Special Envoy for Women and Children Kim Simplis Barrow told News Five that everyone must work together to protect children.

“I first of all want to extend my condolences to the families of course. Umm, we have to continue protecting our children. The work doesn’t stop; it is never ending and it takes all of us, all of us. It takes the media, it takes my office, it takes the parents, it takes the teachers, it takes the society on a whole. And it is really sad when a child—all he wants was a milkshake and to have his life ended in such a tragic and horrible way. It is really…it speaks so much about how we are and how insensitive we are…what are we becoming as a society. And it must stop; it has to stop. So the work continues.”
