Honduran art show opens at Image Factory

Story Picture
A new show opens tonight at the Image Factory in Belize City featuring artists from Honduras. It is called “Cross Over”… and as Patrick Jones found out during a little sneak peek yesterday, whether the works please or disturb you, they will definitely intrigue you.

Faces on the wall, snoopy on top of the mountain, or balls in suspended animation… these are the latest installations at the Image Factory designed to tempt visitors to think critically about the world in which we live.

Leonardo Gonzalez, Artist

“This is a series that depicts the problems of urbanisation. It is called “Snoopy Land”, it show the irony of life. On the one hand there is snoopy, caricature of a happy dog and then, depending on how you look at it, there is the harsh reality. In reality then, the contrast between those who have and those who don’t.”

The installation piece by Leonardo Gonzalez also promotes visitor interaction, as photographs of poor areas of Belize City will be superimposed on Snoopy’s figurine.

Gabriel Galeano uses a different medium to get his message across.

Gabriel Galeano, Artist

“What I portray through this piece is the condition in which the world exists and attempts to start a discussion on the current state of affairs. To depict this condition, I use spheres or round objects suspended in a net, which shows how we are interconnected, yet trapped.”

Allan Mairena, Artist

“This piece is called the reality of the possibility, and it is my vision of the society in which we live. How it functions internally. How complex it is to attain a cultural identity. The video will run continuously and the audio will be much louder than it is right now. The idea is I want the images and the music to have a disturbing effect on the viewer.”

Galeano says the desired cultural identity is not easy to achieve without first being willing to take chances, which is why the exhibition is being mounted under the theme: Cross Over.

Gabriel Galeano

“Cross Over in this case suggests crossing the line. You don’t know what lies across that line. In the case of Belize and Honduras, we are divided culturally and in terms of language, but with similar customs and geography. They are both Central American countries, but if one crosses the border from one country to the other, they don’t know what they will find.”

In addition to “Reality of the Possibility” and “Snoopy Land,” visitors will find drawings and abstract pieces from three other artists, all of whom are members of La Cuarteria, a group promoting contemporary artwork from Honduras. Patrick Jones, for News 5.

“Cross Over” opens tonight and runs through March first at the Image Factory. Tonight will also mark the official opening of the Image Factory’s new bookstore. Both are located on North Front Street in Belize City.
