Two charged with bribing police officers
“Our integrity is not for sale.” That was the strong message sent out to two persons after they tried to bride police officers to get out of trouble. The first incident occurred in San Pedro Town following a search of a hotel room. According to authorities, after they found a metal pipe use for smoking crack cocaine, the suspects were told that they had committed a crime and would be charged for possession of the paraphernalia. It was then that thirty-five year old Ernest Wright is alleged to have placed one hundred and fifty-five dollars in the hands of P.C. Nunez and asked if the charges would be dropped. Nunez promptly informed Wright that he was committing another offence and arrested him for possession of the pipe and attempted bribery. Meanwhile, in Corozal Town, it was not a large sum of money that was offered, but it was still considered bribery. Police say Armando Hernandez was warned twice about drinking in public and then tried to have Police Corporal Reyes drop the charges by paying him twenty-five dollars. Reyes, who was first offered ten, then fifteen dollars denied the “let him slide” request and promptly charged Hernandez with drinking in public and attempted bribery.
