There are only four more shopping days before the Christmas. Across the City, the rush and buzz is in the air as shoppers look for deals. But what items are people purchasing for their families and friends this Christmas? That’s what intern Maria Reneau and Duane Moody went to find out and visited a couple businesses where Belizeans are flocking to. Here’s that report.

Tis the season to be shopping; it’s a time when people go looking for that special gift for their children, siblings, friends and even that special someone. Annually, the hustle and bustle in downtown Belize City becomes overwhelming as residents countdown to Christmas Day. So where can you go for those great deals and thoughtful gifts? A favorite stop is over on North Front Street at Mirab where the lines are never-ending and there’s a variety of items to choose from – jewelry to perfumes; kitchen utensils to bathroom sets as well as toys for children and a fifty percent discount on flat screen TVs.

“In every department there is something for everyone and so this Christmas, we have anything you can think of that’s a gift item—if you are looking for a baby, for a young adult, if you are looking for an older person…there is something for everyone. This year, one of the biggest, hottest sellers is fragrances. People have gotten back into fragrances for gift items and also for themselves. This year the hot sellers are Jennifer Aniston—and we have the gift sets available—and we also have the Justin Bieber on a special deal. In the kitchen department, this year we got in Cake Boss; he is the owner of Carlos Bakery in New Jersey and he has his own line of baking utensils, so that’s a big hit for us as well this year. And then in the shoe department—oh my goodness, which is my favorite department—for men and women we have a variety of glam-glam shoes and semi-casual shoes.”

Sales and Training Manager Orissa Molina says that Mirab has extended its opening hours to give customers a chance to take advantage of its twelve deals of Christmas activities.

“We actually have what we call the “Twelve Deals of Christmas” and every day, it started on the thirteenth of December, we have a different deal every day. It goes for one day; we started with customers getting twenty percent discount. Yesterday actually we had dinner sets—plates, bowls—for very low prices; as low as one dollar and fifty cents. And today, our deal is fifty percent discount on home entertainment systems.”

Over on Queen Street, enter into the digital realm with Cellular World. If you are a tech-fan, this is the place for you. There’s a variety of cell phones, gadgets even drones and Samsung TVs at rock bottom prices.

“We always try to keep up with all the new technology; we are living in a very innovative time. So this year, we Christmas as you said is a time that people give back and we give back to the community. We have done things a little different this year. Obviously we have our phones, which are what we are known for, but we also extended the product line, which is something we have all year round, but we’ve done more gift items. We have Bluetooth speakers, Bluetooth headphones as low as twenty-nine dollars; the speakers for twenty-five dollars. We have drones starting at ninety-nine dollars, tablets for one-twenty-five for those kids that just want a tablet to play games or even if you want to do something with some school work, browse the internet. For a hundred and twenty-five dollars, we try to make things very reasonable that everyone in the household can actually get something.”
