1 of 2 Defendants Freed in Attempted Murder Case
A rookie cop and his friend were accused of the attempted murder of Nigel Castillo in July of this year after a shooting incident at a basketball court behind the Charles Bartlett Hyde building. According to Castillo, he was shot in the lower abdomen while on the court along with Gilbert Arana. However, nineteen-year-old Constable Wallace Meighan saw charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault withdrawn today in the Magistrate’s Court on the order of Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal. The co-accused, twenty-one-year-old Travaughn Chee, saw his charges reduced to use of deadly means of harm on Castillo; two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm on Castillo and Gilbert Arana and wounding on Castillo. Chee was asked for a plea for the new downgraded charges by Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer. He pleaded not guilty and his case was further adjourned for March thirtieth, 2017.
