Shell donates to Stella Maris

Story Picture
The children may be out on their Christmas break, but their principal and teachers are making sure that when students return in January, they will continue to receive the well rounded education they deserve. This morning the management of Stella Maris School, a learning institution for children with special needs, received a sizeable donation from Shell Belize Limited. The school’s Vice-Principal, Erlett Thomas, told News 5’s Jacqueline Woods they will use the seven thousand dollars to refurbish the carpentry facility.

“As you know we have some students who are not academically inclined and we want to provide an outlet for them when they come out of Stella Maris. So those students, especially the boys, we want them to develop a trade so they can learn to do something. So we choose carpentry…Right now we have a building, but it’s low and water enters it, so we asked Shell for a donation to repair that building so we can have one for the students.”

Ruby Harris, Credit Controller, Shell Belize Limited

“This is one of our community efforts. It’s part of our general Shell business principles to give back and our staff was very much in support of special ed and trying to be involved in every aspect of education. We thought that this would have been a great effort to include the special children as part of our giving.”

Thomas says they expect the building to be ready by May 2004.
