Gurkha trial continues on Monday

Story Picture
While Medina will likely go to trial sometime in the new year, three British soldiers charged in a court martial in Belmopan have been waiting over two and a half years for justice to be delivered by the British Army. The trial of Yograj Rai, Ramesh Rai, and Durgahang Limbu for the crime of violent disorder, now in its second incarnation, will continue on Monday when it is expected that Eugene Zabaneh Jr., Said Musa Jr., and Ryan Edwards will be called to the stand to testify. Their friend, David Zabaneh Jr., was fatally beaten in May 2001 during a melee in which the three Gurkhas, along with dozens of other soldiers, were involved. The testimony of the three young Belizeans is expected to be completed by Wednesday, at which time the proceedings will recess until January fifth when the court will reconvene in Colchester, England. At that time the prosecution will continue presenting its case with the calling of British based witnesses. According to court officer, Lt. Colonel Jim Bond, the trial is expected to last two weeks there before going to the jury of seven army officers.
