Pickup Meets Motorcycle in Belmopan; Cyclist Loses Life

A motorist lost his life on Sunday night in Belmopan during a fatal road traffic accident.  Twenty-one-year-old Geovannie Reymundo, a resident of San Martin, was riding a black Meilun motorcycle, along with Anita Canti, when they collided into a dark blue Toyota Hilux.  The pickup truck was being driven at the time by forty-three-year-old Kevin Petzold, a civil engineer of a Cohune Walk address.  The fatal collision occurred in the vicinity of “The Mall” between miles fifty-five and fifty-six on the Hummingbird Highway.  The vehicle sustained damages to the front bumper.  Beneath it was the extensively damaged motorcycle.  According to Petzold, he indicated that he was going to make a left turn into the entrance of “The Mall” when the motorist crashed into his vehicle.

“In Belmopan, police visited a scene sometime around nine or almost nine o’clock last night where they saw a Toyota Hilux and a motorbike under the front bumper.  The driver of the motorbike is one Mr. Reymundo, he was accompanied by a female rider and apparently the pickup was turning into the entrance of a mall between miles fifty-five and fifty-six, where he collided into the pickup.  At this time police cannot say who was in the fault but we know that he received severe head and body injuries.  He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  Fortunately for him, his rider survived with injuries to her body.”

“Any [Notice of Intended Prosecution] sir?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“The driver has been served with an NIP, the driver of the pickup and we hope to make an arrest, if there should be one, very soon.  I know that investigators have been on the ball since last night.”

Petzold has been arrested and charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, drove motor vehicle without due care and attention and failure to give way when changing direction.  It is expected that he will be charged additionally for the injuries caused to Anita Canti.
