Contrabandistas Get Rowdy at Northern Border; Mexico Beefs Up Security

There was an encounter earlier today resulting in a heated exchange between local customs officials and Mexican contrabandists at the northern border in Corozal.  Amateur footage of the incident was posted online this afternoon and that video has since gone viral.  A rowdy mob of peddlers can be seen at the border crossing engaging the officers and hurling expletives in Spanish.  According to a daily newspaper in Quintana Roo, the contrabandists had recovered several bales of merchandise from the Corozal Free Zone.  News Five understands that the entrance to the free zone has been blocked as a result of the incident.  When we contacted Egbert Flowers, acting officer in charge of customs in Santa Elena, he told us that such confrontations are a day-to-day occurrence at the border.  Customs officers often have to fend off contrabandists from hawking their merchandise on the Belizean side of the border.  During the incident today a police officer was reportedly injured when someone in the mob threw a bottle and hit him.  Mexico has since beefed up security by deploying elements from the Secretariat of Mexico’s National Defense to the Subtineinte Lopez Bridge at the Belize/Mexico border.

So… the question that most of the country is asking… is why are the belize customs trying to take things away from mexican contrabandists? I mean in what way is this affecting Belize? Are the not taking enough advantage of our poor locals that they now have to go after the mexicans? They are out of line… I hope these mexicans pick them up and show them how organised crime really works… someone need to teach these pigs a lesson

Why the customs officers at the border don’t say how they take away stuff from the Belizeans every day and take it home. Our customs officer lacks professionalism, because every night when they are at the border drinking. The act like they are the law at our bordering towns. The income tax department should audit them because they are the biggest thieves in the country, bigger than our politicians.

If anyone is looking for proof, just go to the border on the weekends. You can see them drinking beers in plain sight. Some of them get drunk then they start to act stupid, using obscene language when talking to people crossing the border. All of them have no PR, the males and females don’t know how to speak to people. Imagine these are the first contact tourist have with our Belizean people.
