B.E.L. agrees to buy power from Hydro Maya

At an expected output of only two point eight megawatts, it’s tiny, even by Belizean standards, but that electric power, to be provided by a new hydroelectric plant in Toledo, will still be appreciated. Today it was announced by Belize Electricity Limited that the company has signed an agreement with Hydro Maya to supply power to the B.E.L. grid at a cost of six point seven cents per kilowatt-hour. Hydro Maya will generate the current by constructing a small run-of-the-river plant on the Rio Grande near the village of San Miguel. As yet unsigned, however, is a much larger deal under which B.E.L. will buy over thirteen megawatts of power from a co-generation plant at the Tower Hill Sugar Factory. Negotiations between B.E.L. and BELCOGEN have been underway for over a year, but a final price and details have not yet been worked out.
