Asst. Commissioner meets with community

Since taking over command of Eastern Division on August first, Assistant Commissioner Maureen Leslie has wasted no time in establishing her bona fides with the public she is sworn to serve and protect. Last night she met with seventy-five residents of the Kings Park area to hear their concerns about crime. This was the fourth such public forum and according to Leslie, the gatherings have been productive.

“For Port Loyola, their concerns again was the shootings in the areas and more police visibility. We have since cut down the number of shootings, and we have also increased the number of patrols for the Port Loyola area. For the St. Ignatius area, which is zone four, we spoke to people there and their concerns were liquor premises and children allowed inside clubs and bars. We have an operation on dealing with club owners, where they are being warned for summons and if needs be even being arrested if they allow children underage to be in their premises. We have since held meetings with the liquor licensing board and with the mayor of Belize City to assist us in dealing with these problems. Last night we met with zone two, which is the Kings Park area, and we had an excellent turnout again. There we didn’t have many complaints for the police. I think that area is more organized.”
The Eastern Division, which includes the entire Belize District, is manned by four hundred and seventy police officers. The next community meeting, for the mile eight community, takes place on Sunday, November twenty-third at the Sand Pit Restaurant.
