New name sought for rebuilt Bliss

The physical transformation of the Bliss Institute into the country’s premiere venue for the performing arts has entered the homestretch. And while the contractors are under pressure to deliver the building for a projected February inauguration, the Belizean public is being invited to be part of the historic metamorphosis on the foreshore. The building will need a new name to go with its expanded role as the hub of the nation’s creative arts network, and Director of the Institute of the Creative Arts, Andy Palacio, says that’s where he needs your help.

“We are offering a five hundred dollar prize to anybody who can come up with a new name for what has been the Bliss Institute. The deadline is the fifteenth of December and this name is simply to reflect the new image that the building will have once it has undergone the refurbishment and renovation that it is currently undergoing.”
“The building that was there before has undergone tremendous amount of change; the capacity has been expanded significantly, the infrastructure is greatly improved. It will become the premiere venue for the performing arts in this country, and the building is not the institute. The institute is much bigger than a building, so from that standpoint I do see a need to rename it.
“It is clearly not an attempt to get rid of the name Bliss. If the society feels that the name Bliss should be kept, then let them make their submission. An independent panel will be convened and the panel will make the decision on what the new name will be.”
The deadline for the submission of entries is December fifteenth. Suggestions may be dropped off at the offices of the Institute of Creative Arts in the Macmillan Building at twenty-seven Regent Street or sent to Post Office Box 1204 in Belize City.
