Woman’s Life Gruesomely Ended in Belmopan

A woman was gruesomely murdered over the weekend and police need the public’s assistance to determine the identity of who at this point is Jane Doe. Here is the little known so far. The woman had tattoos on her arm and is of fair complexion. She was stabbed multiple times, her throat slit and then set on fire. The body was found as it burned at the Belmopan dump site by an alert watchman. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

As Belizeans continue to celebrate women’s month, a most horrendous crime was committed against a woman in Belmopan. Over the weekend, a body was found burning at the Belmopan Garbage Dump Site off mile four on the Hummingbird Highway by the on-duty watchman as he patrolled the compound. Police were called out to the scene around three p.m. on Saturday and confirmed that the body was that of a female who was burned beyond recognition. But her identity remains unknown.

“I came to work about seven a.m. on Saturday. Actually, my job is to see that the public dispose of the garbage well on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday. Just before three p.m., I went to check at the back when I saw that something was burning. I went closer and I thought it was an animal. After, I decided to call the supervisor that he got in contact with the police immediately.”

“What did you see when you got there? You were telling me that you thought it was an animal.”

“Yes, it was a fire, a live fire and I didn’t want to touch it because it is prohibited for me, as a watchman to…my responsibility was to get to the authorities. I could not crass my hands and authorize anything because I would have been giving force to the crime.”

Although the upper body was burnt beyond recognition, police need your help to determine the identity of the victim. It is known that the female was of fair complexion and had a number of tattoos on the left arm. There are no missing person’s report fitting that description.

What has also not been determined is whether the woman was in fact killed at the dump site or just dumped there, before an attempt to dispose of the body by fire. That aside, there is only one access road to the compound, so could that person have been detected by the City Council worker on duty before the discovery?

“No, it was the weekend and people come between Monday and Friday to collect stuff from the dumpsite. I was the only one here in the front.”

“Is this the first time that you have seen or found something like this?”

 Voice of: Watchman [Translated]

“In reality, it was a surprise for me. In the three years that I have been working here, this is the first time that I have seen something like this.

“Were you afraid after finding this?”

Voice of: Watchman [Translated]

No, in reality, I wasn’t afraid because you have to be prepared for anything that comes in life. The only thing I did was take the decision to call the police.”

After the scene was processed, the body was taken to the Western Regional Hospital where an autopsy revealed that the woman was stabbed multiple times to the abdomen and her throat slit before the body was set on fire. Duane Moody for News Five.
