Belize scores big in Broadcasting Awards
The satellite feed came in too late for Friday’s newscast, but the results of the latest Caribbean Broadcasting Awards are in… and Belize took more than its share of honours, winning the top prize in three categories. Janelle Chanona and Rick Romero won for best news feature with their story on Santa Rosa. The best investigative reporting award went to Ann-Marie Williams and Stewart Krohn for their series on the passport scandal, while Jacqueline Woods, Kayla Arnold and Brent Toombs won for best news story on children’s issues with their report on children and crime.
In addition to those three reporting categories, Channel 5 was also honoured with the annual President’s Award, as the station making the greatest contribution toward the work of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. The only broadcaster earning more prizes in this year’s competition was the Instituto Cubano de Radio y Television. I.C.R.T., with over five thousand employees, took five of the fifteen awards in the television competition as well as the majority of the radio awards. Belize’s 13 Productions was a finalist in two television categories: best commercial advertisement and best public service spot. The full ninety-minute award show will air Wednesday night at seven-thirty…right here on Channel 5.
