Children’s KTV competition begins this weekend

Story Picture
Most news coverage of children has not been particularly encouraging these days, as our youngest citizens have been too frequently cast as victims: of automobile accidents, robberies, shootings and sexual exploitation. But behind the headlines, Belizean kids continue to do what young people always do–have fun. And that fun will hit the airwaves this weekend, right here on Channel 5.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

In three exciting seasons, Channel 5’s popular Karaoke Television has produced a trio of champions: Rina Villanueva, Rohjani Perriott and most recently Louis Maskall. Now it’s time for the kids to take over.

Beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing for five weeks, Belize’s children will compete for fame and prizes in Children’s Karaoke, CKTV. The competition is divided into two categories: twelve and under, and ages thirteen to seventeen. Every week four singers will perform in each division, with one winner from each moving on to the finals in week 5.

As in the past, the venue for Karaoke TV will be Club Calypso at the Princess Hotel. No alcohol will be served, however. Admission is free and families are encouraged to attend. Host for CKTV is Maureen Dawson, who after a successful stint as Neil Hall’s sidekick, takes over at centre stage.

Maureen Dawson, Host, CKTV

“Well the show is not about the host of course, I am excited however to be a part of something as grand as Children’s KTV.”

“You know there’s not a lot of things that kids can take part in in Belize, and so I am very much excited to be a part of this show that Channel 5 is promoting.”

“The competition is important, but we don’t want to put a mark on the competitive side of the show. It’s more about fun and it’s a great opportunity for families to come out at the Calypso and cheer on their favourite kid.”

The fun begins at three sharp at Club Calypso and right here on Channel 5. Sponsors for CKTV 2003 are Fanta and Intelco.
