Tyler Savery’s Mom Leads “Light Our Hearts” Vigil
Shakera Young is on a mission to fight for peace and humanity in Belize City following the murder of her only child in November of last year. Young is the mother of seven-year-old Tyler Savery, who was shot and killed along with his cousin Porshan Pipersburgh on Daly Street as they headed to a nearby coffee shop for a milkshake. It’s been almost five months since the tragedy and on Saturday night at the Memorial Park in Belize City, Young is putting off the first annual ‘Light Our Hearts’ vigil in which she seeks to assist mothers, parents who have lost loved once to violence.
Shakera Young, Organizer, Light Our Hearts Vigil
“Initially it was a women’s rally that I wanted to invite out mothers, invite out women, females that have lost somebody and you are going through that grieving process and you want to fellowship with others, you want to see that you are not alone. So I want to bring them out to uplift them; to let them see that even though you have lost someone dear to you, it doesn’t stop there. You can use your pain and turn it into something wonderful. What I’ve decided to do based on the weekend that passed, I decided to make it an open invitation. Initially it was women, but now it is open because it is not just winning souls for the Lord now; it is now healing because healing needs to take place the right way.”
Those attending the vigil are asked to wear white.
