Special Olympics’ Fun Run

Karil Brannon

Annually, on the first Saturday in the month of April, the Special Olympics Belize hosts a fun run to promote awareness of what the organization does. At six a.m. on Saturday, in every district, residents including some three hundred athletes signed to the organization from across the country will take on the challenge.  According to Karil Brannon of Belize Special Olympics, the fun run is part of the organization’s mission to create a community of inclusion and acceptance of children with intellectual disabilities.

“We are asking that you come out a bit earlier because we have a registration process so that we can really count how many people really come out to run. On the registration sheet, we ask if you want to be a volunteer. So if you are interesting in volunteering, when you register you can indicate that on there so that we can contact you when we are having different sporting activities throughout the year. Anybody can participate tomorrow; you don’t even have to run, you can walk along the route. In Belize City, we are having two routes—we are having a junior route and a senior route—it is up to you which one of the routes you want to chose. All are starting from Stella Maris School.”

Registration for the Belize Special Olympics fun run is free.
