Cop who killed at caye shoots again
And just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, they did. A police officer, already on interdiction for fatally shooting a Caye Caulker resident earlier this year, has shot and wounded another man, this time in Independence Village. According to police reports, twenty-year-old Robert Young told cops that around two on the morning of September twenty-first, he was hanging out at a bar on Fadden Avenue when a man walked up to him and shot him in the knee with a nine-millimetre pistol. Police have since arrested one of their own, based on Young’s report and eyewitness accounts. That man is twenty-seven year old Sheldon Arzu, and tonight he’s charged with aggravated assault, grievous harm and discharging a firearm in public. According to Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid, Arzu has been on interdiction since June of this year after villagers in Caye Caulker reported that the officer, in uniform and on duty, shot and killed Ruben Alarcon without justifiable cause. News 5 understands Arzu had been staying in Independence since that incident, awaiting his trial. G. Michael Reid says since the latest shooting Arzu’s gun license has been revoked, but the half salary he receives while on interdiction will continue until a verdict in the Caye Caulker case is handed down.
