Home Affairs C.E.O. Gets ‘Antsy’ on Chester’s Record

George Lovell

Earlier this week, we asked C.E.O. George Lovell of the Ministry of Home Affairs about the transfers of some of top cops in Belize District. One in particular is the transfer of Chester Williams. So will the move affect the peace established over the last few days? In the interview, Lovell appears to take a swipe at Williams’ record. Williams also responds to the C.E.O.’s statement which would suggest that there has not been improvement in crime on the south side.

“The shakeup in Belize City that you are referring to comes at time when there is serious efforts being made to keep the peace by the criminal or gang elements and they believe things will be better with one particular officer, Mister Williams, in charge; do you foresee a set back or a back slide once the change goes through?”

(Ret’d) Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of Home Affairs

“None whatsoever. And again, my question to you is, and maybe you can use whatever response that you have to whatever response you will have as the answer to the question you had asked, is – have there been any change especially in the major crime rate over the last four years even with this officer being there that you are referring to over the last two years; one. And the next thing is, in terms of career prospect for the same officer that you are talking about and all other officers, do you think it is fair to leave him there even though that he might in fact been as effective as you are saying, and don’t give others the same opportunity to prove their worth seeing that it is based on their performance that their future enhancement or promotion or upward mobility within the Department will be judged based on the kind of leadership that they have under these same sort of challenging situation.”

“Now, sir, in speaking with Mister Lovell earlier in the week, he alluded to crime not being or there not being changes to crime in the South; how would you respond or how would you react to that?”

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“I will only say that the statistics speaks for itself. I have nothing more to say.”
