Toddler Dead in George Price Highway Accident

A baby was also killed in a fatal road traffic accident over the holiday weekend, this time the mishap took place on the George Price Highway near mile nine.  Seven-month-old Esmay Ferguson perished when a Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by twenty-three-year-old Darrel Jackson.  The vehicle was headed in the direction of Belmopan when Jackson lost control and overturned.  Inside the vehicle were eight other occupants, including baby Esmay and four other minors.  Not only was the vehicle seemingly overcrowded, but Jackson was driving with a learners permit.  He has since been detained by police pending further investigation.

“On Labor Day May first, at about two p.m., Hattieville police were summoned to the scene of a road traffic accident at mile nine on the George Price Highway.  Upon arrival, they observed a green Mitsubishi Endeavor bearing license plates BCC-57209 on a ditch off the road.  Initial investigation revealed that Darrel Jackson, a twenty-three-year-old Belizean laborer of Ivor Street, Belize City, was driving a 2007 Mitsubishi Endeavor on the George Price Highway from the direction of Belize City towards Belmopan and upon reaching mile nine, he lost control of the vehicle and overturned.  Traveling with him were several people, including adults and minors.  During the accident, a seven-month-old baby perished.  The scene was visited and a medical form was issued.  Jackson is presently in our custody pending charges.”

“From the investigation, we are gathering that he only had a learner‘s permit.”

“You said several persons; can you give us a number of people who were occupants in the vehicle?”

“Apparently there were about nine occupants in the vehicle, five minors and the rest were adults.”

“And the status of the mother, are you able to say?”

“She has been treated and released.  Only two persons are presently at the K.H.M.H. and are in a critical condition.”

 

Darrel Jackson has been charged with driving without due care and attention, manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and failure to comply with the conditions of a learner’s permit.
