John Deshaies Engages Legal Representation for Long Fight

John Deshaies

Canadian national John DeShaies remains in police lockup following his arraignment on Friday, when he was denied bail in the Independence Magistrate Court.  He appeared in court for charges of theft and handling stolen goods of over fifty-seven thousand dollars’ worth of electronics from the Placencia Casino, has obtained legal representation. But instead of being taken to the Hattieville Prison, DeShaies was transported back to Corozal where he is the suspect in connection with the double murder of Canadian-American couple Francesca Matus and Drew Devoursney.  One of DeShaies attorneys, Estevan Perera, says his first act after speaking with his client later today will be to seek bail. We spoke with Perera about his client’s status today.

“The situation with Mister DeShaies is that we have yet to meet to go over the details of this matter. However, what we do know at this time is that Mister DeShaies had only been assisting his employers, who were the then-managers of the casino, in respect to the items, and then eventually, there was some kind of dispute between the parties; and this charge was raised against him.”

“Presumably you do have to still meet with your client; but can we presume that he intends to seek bail in relation to this charge?”

Estevan Perera

“Yes, we will be seeking bail for Mister DeShaies, shortly.”

Reporter

“We do know that your client is a person of interest in the double murder in Corozal; I presume you will be speaking with him with regard to whatever questioning police up there are doing?”

Estevan Perera

“Yes, I will be discussing that with Mister DeShaies in the future, yes.”

Reporter

“Sir, has he retained you as attorney for that particular matter for which he is being investigated, as at least one of the suspects police have intentions to speak with?”

Estevan Perera

“Not as yet.”

Reporter

“Your client is still remanded in Central Prison – I need to ask?”

Estevan Perera

“No; I understand that Mr. Deshaies is still being held at the Corozal Police Station at this point in time.”

Reporter

“Okay, so they are still as far as you know, questioning him?”

Estevan Perera

“That’s what I believe, yes.”

An application for bail is expected to be filed later this week.
