Ludwin Lalin Death a Result of Gang Ties?

Ludwin Lalin

Eighteen-year-old Ludwin Lalin, a Guatemalan national, was shot and killed in a senseless act of gun violence on Monday night.  The fatal attack on the teenager happened on Curl Thompson Street in the Port Loyola neighborhood, a stone‘s throw away from his residence.  A motive for his murder is yet to be determined.  While Lalin is not gang-affiliated, he may have been acquainted with others who are.  Belize City police are looking at that angle in an attempt to ascertain a cause for the latest homicide.

ACP Chester Williams, O.C., Eastern Division South

“Mr. Lalin was shot and killed two nights ago in the Jane Usher Boulevard area and again, just like Bonilla, we have no gang affiliation.  Yes, he might have friends who have gang affiliations and it could be that that was one of the reasons why he was targeted.  We currently have two persons we are interviewing in respect of that matter.  We know it happened in broad daylight and there are persons who may have witnessed what happened, but the usual difficulty is to get those persons to cooperate and give statements to the police.  And so, there are many obstacles moving forward so we’ll try to see how best we can get the relevant statements to be able to deal with those persons who we believe are responsible for the murder of the young fellow, Lalin, in the Jane Usher Boulevard area.”

“Now Mr. Williams, we went to interview the family the day following the murder of young Lalin and we were told by the family members that they didn’t get interviewed or the police didn’t come to their residence until midday that day.  Is this the modus operandi of how investigators carry out their investigations following such a gruesome murder?”

ACP Chester Williams

“I will refute that statement because I know for a fact that the night in question, the police spoke to the relatives and had told them exactly what took place and the following day the police went back to the area.  I personally went to the area and spoke to the family and told them where we were and offered our condolences to them, as well as to assure them that we will be doing whatever we can to see how we can find those persons who may be responsible for the murder of the young man.”
