Councillor meets with F.I.U. over compromised database

Story PictureThe Financial Intelligence Unit has said that the Cemetery Road MoneyGram agency was shut down because of an identity theft scam. But the investigations are ongoing and the public still has a sense of insecurity about personal information being accessed from the City Council’s drivers’ license database. When City Councillor responsible for traffic, Wayne Usher, appeared on this morning’s Open Your Eyes along with the Mayor, he commented on the internal investigations at the council. And while he could not go into details, Usher says he has met with F.I.U. Director, Marilyn Williams, along with other members of the council and they are looking at security measures.

Wayne Usher, City Councillor
“What is true is that we need to see how the operation works, how there could have been a breach if any—well, yes there has been a breach, how not to let it happen again and move forward from there. I’ve had a phone call from Mr. Gillett who does this sort of thing very well. I’ve invited him to come in, I’ve invited the F.I.U. to come in. We want to clean house, make sure it doesn’t happen again because it’s already happened and to find out what safeguards we can put in in terms of maybe restricting access right within the department to who has access to the database.”

Marleni Cuellar
“Is there any kind of confidentiality clause for the type of information that is stored at the Traffic Department?”

Wayne Usher
“That is right. From you get onboard you have to sign that document saying you will keep these things confidential. But I believe and most people believe that it is someone perhaps from the outside with maybe with some collusion from inside but not as many and it will be difficult to pinpoint a who.”

Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers says they are also planning to improve security in their I.T. Department.
