P.U.P.s Briceño Calls for National Unity

Leader of the People’s United Party, John Briceño, joined in with condemnation of the inflammatory remarks made by Eldred Neal. He pointed to the Father of the Nation George Price’s vision of a Belize where we are all one and not subject to division based on race, color or any other divisive thing. As he called for healing of divisions within the Union, Briceño reminded that there is a greater enemy to fight.

“I think we all need to condemn these kind of inflammatory language that is being used; any sort of racism or any sort of looking down at any group of people, any category of people – be it religion, be it sexual orientation, be it by race or by economic standards; we need to condemn and we need to condemn it one hundred percent that we cannot tolerate any kind of behaviour on any person or any groups of persons. And we in the P.U.P. condemn that; and we hope that the P.S.U. can find a way to heal these wounds among themselves; they play a very important role in this country.”

Briceño, who himself had been recorded some time ago making strong remarks against his own party, says that in this day and age politicians and public figures have to become increasingly guarded against saying the wrong thing. Even so, he believes the incident should not cost its participants their jobs.

Later on, we’ll hear from the National Garifuna Council.
