N.G.O.’s Condemn Actions Against Media
The Belize Network of Non-Governmental Organizations has issued a statement condemning what it calls the vicious and personal attacks on Senator Eamon Courtenay and the press during Wednesday’s Senate inquiry. Reiterating the importance of the Committee’s work, it maintains that the press must be able to follow the truth and show the public what is going on and if they are attacked while doing so it must be condemned. It called the disruption “immature” and a distraction from the intent of the proceedings. Regarding Sergeant at Arms Brian “Yellow Man” Audinett, the Network states that it is “reprehensible and embarrassing” that he continue to carry the Mace, which represents the dignity and authority of the Speaker and is never absent from the House of Representatives, and called his behaviour “loutish.” It ends by calling on Committee chairman Aldo Salazar to ensure that any future troublemakers not be allowed to stay in the Assembly’s chambers.
