The Second Annual C-Ray Cycling Club High School Series

The second annual C-Ray Cycling Club High School series held its finals today. One hundred and thirty students from ten high schools in the Belize District gathered at the Marion Jones Stadium for the final races in the male and female category, which kicked off at four this afternoon. Organizer Kaya Cattouse says the aim is to get more females into cycling at the Federation level.

“The idea for this came about particularly to populate the female category in the Federation races. As people may know we race with maybe six or seven cyclists every race – which is very, very low. So, encouraging females from the high school level to get involved for me is the easiest way to do so. Also, we have, from last year of the thirty six females we have three of them sticking with it who are currently riding at the female category for the Federation. And we have quite a number of Junior Cyclists males as well. So, the high school series is somewhat of a transition from being a novice to riding at the federation level as a junior cyclist.”

“What does the female participation look like; are you satisfied with the turn out?”

“We have forty two registered females registered in the B category; and four registered in the A category. The A category are just girls who raced last year and are now racing in the federation. So, any females or males cycling under the Federation are considered A category.”

“What do you think of the level of competition; the skills demonstrated by these high schoolers?”

“We have quite a number of raw talent and like I keep saying, my job here is to introduce these kids to the sport and I am hoping that there are people out here; people paying attention to this series to say ‘ok, this one, this one and this one di do good mek ah grab deh and sponsor them and see weh deh got ‘ So, for me this is really to introduce the kids to the sports and hopefully someone sees their talent and picks them up.”
