Bradley Calls for Higher Standards for Elected Officials

Darrell Bradley

Should Brian Audinett be removed as the macebearer from the House? The People’s United Party and several others have called for his removal following his behavior inside the senate hearing. Mayor Bradley pointed out that persons with elected or un-elected positions in public office should carry themselves in a manner that is respectful of that duty. He went on to say that there has been a lowering of standards for representatives in public offices and that must change.  At the end of it all, Bradley says there should be consequences for the type of disruptive and unruly behavior in the National Assembly.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“I think if people want to call for his removal, which is within their right we live in a free and democratic society. Whatever the consequence is, I am not the one who makes those decisions, but I think there should be consequences, because, again, you hold an office in our land that is symbolic and I think that within in that context, just like in Law, they say that justice must not only be done, but it must be seen to be done. Sometimes as a politician, I feel that the media unfair to me. But it is something that is an occupational hazard. When you hold public office you have to be very careful.   You are speaking about the national assembly of Belize, and one of the things that I have felt over the course of being in politics, I feel that there is a lowering of the standards of conduct of the elected, non elected high holding persons in government, in opposition, in municipal government, all over the country and we need to ensure that we  have a conversation about what is the appropriate level of conduct and when that level or that standard is lowered, that we hold those people to account. I am not the person who is responsible for that, but if I were, I know what I would have done.”
