World Oceans Day Celebrated
World Oceans Day is being observed on June eighth. It is a day set aside with activities and awareness to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans. Locally, Oceana Belize is leading the charge with activities to commemorate this day. Today they took the local media on a tour of the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and other surrounding areas to highlight the economic and ecological importance of these areas. Our news team just returned this evening from Punta Gorda – so we will have a full story of today’s tour on Thursday. But first, here’s why OCEANA’s VP says we should protect our resources, including our waters.
Janelle Chanona, VP, OCEANA Belize
“Every time we sing the national anthem, we talk about wealth untold; I think these places are embodiments of that because we really get to see why we can call ourselves very justifiably jewels. And I think World Ocean Day is an opportunity to really try, and I emphasize try, to value just how much blessings we have to count on in terms of our marine assets and if we invest wisely and develop sustainably that we can continue to benefit tremendously from these types of locations.”
