Accused pleads guilty to theft at Spoonaz Café
In May of 2016, Spoonaz Photo Café & Bar was burglarized and the culprit was caught on surveillance camera. Today, after more than a year of incarceration, the accused thirty-nine year old Derrick Garbutt, an unemployed of the Ladyville area, changed his not guilty plea to guilty. Garbutt claimed he was drunk when he committed the burglary and after pleading guilty, he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment less the year he has been behind bars since the burglary. The Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith noted that he had a previous conviction for a crime of theft for which he was sentenced to three years and imposed the maximum sentence. Sometime between May thirtieth and thirty-first, 2016, Garbutt gained entry into Spoonaz Photo Café & Bar located on North Front Street, Belize City. He managed to pry open a back door with a metal pipe and stole an assortment of liquors and a pellet gun all to a total value of one thousand seven hundred dollars. His previous conviction for theft is for stealing from Chill Spot also in the month of May 2016.
