Accused in Fatal 2016 Accident Faces Supreme Court Trial

Belize City resident, Victor Mason Gibbs, accused of causing the death of a Jehovah witness, Lilian Emily Guy on July thirtieth, 2016 was today committed to stand trial at the October session of the Supreme Court.  The horrific traffic accident occurred in the busy area of the Michael Finnegan Market. At the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry today before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser, Gibbs learnt he will head to trial; the evidence of the prosecution was not challenged in court.  A vehicle driven by Gibbs, crushed and pinned down Guy; her right foot was severely damaged and she had to be rushed to the hospital where her foot was amputated.  She succumbed to her injuries on July thirty-first, 2016 when due to her religious beliefs, she refused a blood transfusion. Gibbs was reportedly intoxicated when he drove from the side of the Novelo’s Terminal in his vehicle to the other side of the street where Guy was along with a number of other persons on the side walk.   Today, after his case was committed to stand trial at the Supreme Court, Gibbs’ bail was confiscated and he was offered a new bail in the sum of eight thousand dollars plus two sureties of the same amount.  He will be tried for manslaughter by negligence for the death of Guy and two counts of negligent harm upon Francis Hinds and Stephanie Pouchie, two others injured in the incident.
