Car plunges off ferry; driver drowns
An accident at a Corozal ferry crossing has led to the death of a motorist. Twenty-four year old Roberto Sandoval was killed on Saturday morning when the pickup truck he was driving rolled off the ferry at Pueblo Nuevo on the New River. According to police, Sandoval, his wife Maria and a sixteen-year-old minor were in the truck as it drove onto the small hand crank ferry, south of Corozal Town. The vehicle’s brakes apparently failed, however, and instead of stopping, it plunged into the river. While the two passengers managed to escape and swim to safety, Sandoval was not so fortunate. He apparently made it out of the truck, but drowned in the process. On Sunday afternoon his body was recovered from the river and awaits a post-mortem at Corozal Hospital.
