Kidnapper dead in abduction attempt

Tonight Corozal police are investigating a disturbing report of kidnapping, which has left one man dead and another in critical condition. According to taxi driver Robert Rosalez, he was called out to a job in an area called Dominguez layout, located near San Antonio Village in the Corozal District. But Rosalez told the cops when he got there, two masked men, both armed with shotguns, came out of the bushes and held him up. The bandits drove him about a quarter mile up the road then stopped and demanded Rosalez’s jewellery and cash. That done, the attackers then blindfolded and bound the taxi man’s hands and left him inside the car on the backseat. Left to his own devices, Rosalez says he got his hands free and pulled out a knife he kept in the car. When one of the gunmen came to check on him, Rosalez pounced, stabbing his kidnapper and getting hold of the shotgun. But at this point, the second gunman came to his accomplice’s aid and fired once at Rosalez. He missed…But Rosalez didn’t, and the attacker ran away with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Corozal police caught up with him at the Orange Walk Hospital undergoing surgery for his injuries. He has since been identified as Raul Barahona. As for the second perpetrator, when cops went to the scene of the crime, they found the body of Liberio Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s body has since been transported to the Corozal Hospital where it awaits a post mortem. Police sources tell News 5 that both Barahona and Rodriguez are no strangers to law enforcement authorities, as they are believed to be part of an active criminal ring. Both men are from Corozal.
