Unions and Finance Minister talk about S.S.B.
In the continuing saga of those proposed changes in Social Security, a meeting was held on Monday between union representatives and Finance Minister Ralph Fonseca. According to a government press release, and corroborated by a union spokesman, both sides agreed to consult separately on the three major facets of the proposed package. That is the increase of contributions from seven to eight percent of insured earnings, the expansion of the earnings ceiling from three hundred and twenty dollars and the increase in the retirement age. There will be a two-week time frame for discussion on the first topic with at least thirty days allotted for the last two. According to union leaders, over the next few days they will be canvassing their membership for direction on the way forward. The unions have thus far been adamant in their opposition to any increase in payroll contributions for Social Security.
